ANNOUNCEMENT
Summer School on Neutron Small Angle Scattering and Reflectometry from
Submicron Structures
National Institute of Standards and Technology
Cold Neutron Research Facility
Gaithersburg, Maryland 20899
August 28 - 31, 1995
The small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and neutron reflectometry (NR)
facilities at NIST's Cold Neutron Research Facility (CNRF) are available to
any qualified researchers who submit experiment proposals which then
undergo peer review. This four day course will provide potential new users
of these techniques with a basic understanding of the fundamental concepts
and methodology along with training in the use of the SANS and NR
facilities at the CNRF. Applications of the techniques will be illustrated
by specific examples drawn from recent research in polymer science,
nanophase metals and ceramics, microporous media, magnetism and
superconductivity, and structural biology. The course will enable
attendees to assess the applicability of the techniques, and the CNRF
instruments, to their own research interests and provide technical
information needed to prepare effective experiment proposals.
The course will consist of morning lectures by CNRF staff, and invited
speakers, followed by afternoon training sessions involving actual
collection and analysis of SANS and NR data. Attendance will be limited to
twenty to assure adequate supervision and participation for each attendee.
Participants are invited to bring samples for feasibility measurements, but
should contact one of the organizers listed below in advance. Topics to be
covered include:
o Principles of Neutron Scattering at Low-Q
- reflection, refraction and diffraction
- coherent and incoherent scattering
- cross sections and reflectivity coefficients
- kinematic and dynamical scattering effects
o SANS Instrumentation
o SANS Methods
- single particle scattering
- interparticle interference
- contrast variation and isotope labeling
- non-particulate systems
- high concentration methods
o SANS Applications
- polymer conformation, phase morphology
- colloids and microemulsions
- metal/ceramics precipitates/porosity
o Neutron Reflectometry Instrumentation
o Neutron Reflectometry Methods
- specular and non-specular scattering
- polarized neutron reflectometry
- model fitting
o Neutron Reflectometry Applications
- polymer brushes and thin films
- Langmuir-Blodgett, and lipid bilayer films
- magnetic multilayers
- self-assembled monolayers
- magnetic penetration in superconducting films
- corrosion and interdiffusion
o Sample Preparation Techniques
o Multiple Scattering and Resolution Effects
The summer school is sponsored by the CNRF and the National Science
Foundation (NSF cooperative agreement DMR-9423101). There is no
registration fee for the course. The only cost to participants will be for
travel and subsistence. Financial assistance is available for graduate
students, postdocs, and others who otherwise would be unable to attend.
Financial assistance will be based primarily on need and may be limited to
one or two individuals per institution in the interests of fairness and
diversity.
If interested in attending the summer school, please provide the
