Postdoctoral Position at Manuel Lujan, Jr. Neutron Scattering Center
at Los Alamos National Laboratory

The Manuel Lujan, Jr. Neutron Scattering Center (the Lujan Center) at Los
Alamos National Laboratory, high power pulsed source of spallation
neutrons, is a national user facility available to scientists from
industry, academia, and other national labs for condensed matter
experiments. The Lujan Center is seeking a postdoctoral candidate to
perform research in the development and measurement of internal strain
using neutron, x-ray, and synchrotron diffraction techniques.  The
successful candidate will join a group of researchers experienced in
measurement and interpretation of diffraction data.  Typical materials of
interest include metal-matrix composites, monophase and multi-phase
metallic systems, martensitic systems, and ceramics.  Finite element
modeling via ABAQUS for interpretation and prediction is a major component
of this program.  The succesful applicant wil help in the construction of a
new neutron diffraction instrument specifically designed for the
measurement of internal strain.  In addition to in-house neutron and x-rays
diffraction experiments, there will be an opportunity to work at the
Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory.  The opportunity
exists to collaborate with other organizations at Los Alamos.  Candidate
must be a US citizen and able to obtain an L-clearance.

A Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science and /or Engineering, or Mechanical
Engineering completed within the last three years or soon to be completed
is required. Annual starting salaries range from $44,020 to $47,570, plus a
generous, comprehensive benefits package. Candidates may compete for a
Director's Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the
prestigious J. Robert Oppenheimer Fellowship (Starting salary -$67,400).
