JOB VACANCIES IN CRYSTALLOGRAPHY AT ISIS
========================================
Crystallographers for Neutron Diffraction
ISIS, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxford, UK
The ISIS Facility at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory provides the
most intense pulsed neutron beams in the world and is used by
scientists from the UK and abroad for condensed matter physics,
chemistry, biology and materials science. The main interface between
the external user community and ISIS is provided by three
experimental science divisions containing approximately 80 scientists.
We are augmenting our instrument suite for neutron diffraction and
wish to appoint experimental scientists to join the Crystallography
Group in the ISIS Diffraction and Muon Division. There are two
vacancies:
Post I.
Instrument scientist to take responsibility for the powder diffraction
programme on the General Materials Diffractometer GEM. This
instrument is funded through a grant awarded to the Royal Institution
and is currently under construction at ISIS. The appointee would be
expected to be involved in the installation, commissioning and
subsequent operation of the GEM diffractometer, and would also be
expected to develop the novel capabilities of the instrument. The
appointee should be an established crystallographer with
approximately 10 years experience in experimental neutron
diffraction. This post will be a permanent post at Band 4 level.
Post II.
Instrument scientist to take responsibility for the support and
development of the CLRC high pressure diffraction user programme at
ISIS. With new, world-leading, high pressure facilities available,
there is a growing external user programme in this area. A second
area of responsibility is the development of neutron powder diffraction,
including support of the user programme in magnetism, and a good
knowledge of experimental and theoretical aspects of magnetic
neutron scattering would be beneficial. The Post II appointment will
be for a fixed term of three years, with the possibility of permanency,
and will be at Band 5 level.
The posts are suitable for experimental condensed matter scientists
who have shown an aptitude for original research and both appointees
would be expected to carry out vigorous personal research
programmes. Experience with advanced instrumentation would be
advantageous.
Applicants require a degree, HNC/HND or equivalent, in a scientific,
mathematical or engineering subject, together with relevant
postgraduate research experience.
The salary level will be in the range of 14,828 to 24233 pounds sterling
(Band 5) or 17692 to 30665 pounds sterling (Band 4). Appointments
will normally be at the Band minimum but relevant experience will be
taken into account. Further progression is dependent on performance.
A non-contributory pension scheme and a generous leave allowance
are also offered.
