Neutron Sciences Symposium
on
Scientific and Industrial Opportunities for the Spallation Neutron
Source (SNS)

Place:	Washington, D.C., J. W. Marriott Hotel, 1331 Pennsylvania
Avenue, NW
Time:	March 3-4, 1998

Purpose of the Symposium

This symposium will highlight the scientific, industrial, and
educational opportunities possible with a next-generation neutron
source. Early neutron sources built in the U.S. and abroad rapidly
demonstrated the utility of neutrons for research in condensed matter
physics. As cold sources and improved instrumentation were added, the
applications of neutrons spread to other fields such as chemistry,
materials sciences, earth and environmental sciences, and life sciences.
More recently, neutrons have become important in engineering sciences
and industrial development. But while the utility of neutrons has
increased significantly, no new sources have been built in the U.S. for
decades. In fact, a recent assessment by the OECD revealed a serious
decline in neutron facilities worldwide. This problem has become of
even greater concern because a fundamental limitation of neutron sources
in science applications is the lack of intensity, and as R&D has become
more diverse and sophisticated, the need for more intense sources has
heightened.

Now, the DOE has funded the completion of a Conceptual Design Report for
a new accelerator-based neutron source, the Spallation Neutron Source
(SNS), and funds are in the FY 1998 budget to prepare for a construction
line item request in FY 1999. The SNS is a collaborative project
involving five DOE National Laboratories in the design and construction
of a powerful one megawatt, pulsed, neutron source that can be
economically upgraded to significantly higher powers in the future. The
neutron user community has established the performance requirements for
the SNS, and is intimately involved in selecting and building the
neutron scattering instrumentation. This symposium will explore the
needs and opportunities in the scientific and industrial communities
that will be stimulated by the availability of such a powerful new
source and advanced instrumentation.

Evening Reception

A reception is planned for the evening of Tuesday, March 3, with remarks
by Senator Pete V. Domenici. Senator Domenici is Chairman of the
Senate Budget Committee and a member of the Senate Appropriations
Committee.

The reception will be co-hosted by the five Department of Energy (DOE)
National Laboratories involved in the SNS Collaboration:
Argonne National Laboratory
Brookhaven National Laboratory
Ernest Orlando Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Los Alamos National Laboratory
Oak Ridge National Laboratory
and sponsored by Lockheed Martin Corporation.
Invitees will include members of Congress and their staff, government
agencies, professional societies, Nobel Laureates involved in neutron
science, conference attendees, and dignitaries.

There will also be a poster display at the reception highlighting
scientific research and industrial developments as well as the user
programs at some of the existing neutron facilities in the U.S.

Information for Attendance

The symposium will be held in Washington, D.C., March 3-4, 1998, at the
J. W. Marriott Hotel, 1331 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. If you plan to
attend you must return the required information to the Conference Office
by fax or e-mail only. Attendees will need to make their own room
reservations. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Marriott at a
special conference rate. To make reservations, call 202-393-2000 and
mention the SNS Symposium.

HOTEL RESERVATIONS MUST BE MADE BY JANUARY 30, 1998, IN ORDER TO BOOK A
