Summary:
The Manuel Lujan Jr. Neutron Scattering Center (Lujan Center), a
high-powered pulsed source of spallation neutrons, is a national
user facility available to scientists from industry, academia, and other
national labs for condensed matter experiments. We are
seeking a scientist to assist with the planning, design, and construction
of the University of California Research Materials
Diffractometer (UCMRD) and to conduct applied and basic neutron scattering
research with an emphasis on measurement and
interpretation of texture in polycrystalline materials. The split between
these two tasks is approximately 50/50. The UCMRD is an
ultra-high-intensity powder diffractometer that will be constructed at the
Lujan Center over the next two years as part of the
Spectrometer Development Project sponsored by the Department of Energys
(DOE) Office of Basic Energy Sciences. The
diffractometer will consist of an axial array of approximately 1500 3He
detectors positioned about a sample located 9m from the
Lujan Center neutron source. It will be equipped with various special
environment devices including texture goniometers,
high-pressure devices, cryogenic equipment, sample changers, and furnaces.
The Spectrometer Development Team (SDT) for this
instrument is strongly connected with the materials science community in
the University of California. The successful candidate will
support and report to the SDT principal investigator and closely interact
with the SDT technical director, who is resident at the Lujan
Center and oversees this project on a daily basis. Specific
responsibilities include: overseeing of the development of technical, cost
and schedule baselines for the diffractometer; managing the design,
procurement and installation of the diffractometer in accordance
with technical, cost, and schedule baselines; ensuring that adequate
reports are produced for the DOE; consulting with the
Spectrometer Development Project Leader on actions required to achieve
project milestones; organizing the scientific activities of the
SDT in conjunction with the Principal Investigator. The successful
candidate will be an energetic, creative individual who can
contribute to the existing LANSCE texture program using neutron diffraction
and establish new and independent research programs
with an emphasis on materials issues in support of national security
research. The successful candidate will serve as scientific
liaison between MST Division, the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary
Physics, and other Los Alamos organizations and the Lujan
Center; collaborate effectively on scientific problems of mutual interest;
interact effectively with the broader community of
experimentalists within and outside the Laboratory; and attract outstanding
postdoctoral researchers and/or graduate students. More
information on the Lujan Center and its programs can be obtained at

solids. A demonstrated record of accomplishments and expertise in
experimental neutron/x-ray scattering. Demonstrated ability to
develop original ideas for experiments, design experiments, acquire and
analyze data, and publish results. Proven effective
interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills. Above
skills must be supported by publications and references. Ability
to obtain a DOE "Q" clearance.
Desired Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:
Experience with the operation or construction of a large experimental
facility. Experience, or contacts within, the DOE National
Laboratories, Science-based Stockpile Stewardship program, and University
of California system. Experience conducting research or
building instrumentation at a spallation neutron source. Familiarity in
