Neutron Scattering Instrument Scientists
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for
Instrument Scientists with the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) project.
The SNS, a next-generation source for the U.S. Department of Energy's
(DOE) Office of Science, is a collaborative project among 5 DOE National
Laboratories led by ORNL. The SNS will consist of a 1-mA H- front-end,
a 1-GeV proton linac, and a 221-m circumference accumulator ring. This
accelerator will produce short pulse neutron beams from a 1-MW beam of
protons bombarding a liquid Hg target, for use by a variety of
state-of-the-art instruments. The facility is scheduled for completion
in 2005.
Responsibilities include the scientific oversight of design, installation,
commissioning, and operation of neutron scattering instrumentation being
built as part of the SNS Project. Will develop links with the User
Community and conduct materials research using neutron scattering. Will
interact with engineering design/drafting personnel, other scientists,
shop personnel, and external suppliers and contractors. The initial
assignment, for up to 5 years during the instrument design phase, may be
at the Argonne National Laboratory followed by a transfer to the Oak Ridge
National Laboratory for instrument installation and operation.
Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. or equivalent training plus
postdoctoral experience in a materials-related discipline, preferably
involving neutron scattering or a related technique. Experience with
instrument development an asset. Expertise in crystallography
(single-crystal or powder diffraction), inelastic scattering (chopper
spectrometers), and engineering materials (residual strain and texture)
desired but excellent candidates from any discipline are encouraged to
apply. Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to
work in a team environment on technically challenging problems required.
Qualified candidates should submit a resume with a list of 3 or more
references to:
