SNS Sample Environment Team Leader
The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science has funded the design and
construction of the SNS, which will provide the most powerful
next-generation short-pulse spallation neutron source in the world for
neutron scattering and related research in broad areas of the physical,
chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences. The SNS is a
partnership among six DOE national laboratories (Argonne, Brookhaven,
Jefferson, Lawrence Berkeley, Los Alamos, and Oak Ridge), and is scheduled
for completion in 2006.
This assignment, for 2 to 4 years during the instrument design phase, is at
the Argonne National Laboratory followed by a transfer to the Oak Ridge
National Laboratory for instrument installation and operation. Basic
responsibilities include activities that relate to the development,
procurement, installation and maintenance of all sample environment
equipment and instrumentation for the SNS neutron scattering instruments.
Sample environment equipment can include, but is not limited to, equipment
for producing and maintaining high or low temperatures, high magnetic
fields, or high pressures and automatic sample changers for a variety of
sample geometries and conditions.
Specific duties include:
· Works with the SNS instrument scientists and the user community to
identify and prioritize the needs for all types of sample environment
equipment.
· Plans and carries out an R&D program for ongoing development of
innovative improvements in sample environment capabilities.
· Recruits and directs staff to design, develop, procure, or fabricate
the necessary equipment, and test and maintain this equipment once the
facility is operational.
· Develops and implements plans for ongoing testing and calibration of
this equipment.
· Interfaces with the SNS instrument scientists, engineers, and
technicians and with the scientific user community; interfaces with
procurement and ESH representatives.
· Ensures the design, procurement, and use of all equipment is in
compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program
requirements including ISMS.
· Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation
of values and ethics.
Successful candidate will have a PhD in science or engineering and at least
5 years of experience in successfully developing sample environment
equipment and controls, or equivalent combination of education and
applicable experience required. Demonstrated managerial ability and
supervisory experience desired. Experience with neutron scattering is
strongly desired. Excellent written and verbal communications skills needed.
Qualified candidates should submit a resume with a list of three or more
references to: Selection Committee, Attn: P. H. Miller, SNS Project, Dept.
S-9141, 701 Scarboro Road, Mail Stop 6478, Oak Ridge, TN 37830 or email to
tho at sns.gov. Please reference the job title when applying. Applications
will be accepted until the position is filled.
