IPNS has an opening for a physicist or computer scientist to work in the
area of data acquisition software.  The job description is attached.  The
closing date for applications for this position is November 20, 2000.

Assistant Scientist--Data Acquisition

The Intense Pulsed Neutron Source Division of Argonne - located 20 miles SW
of the Chicago Loop - is the world's first spallation neutron facility
dedicated to materials research.

We seek a person with a Ph.D. degree in physics and/or computer science to
fill an Assistant Scientist position to specialize in data acquisition
software. This person will be involved in the following activities

Design and implement improvements in the IPNS data acquisition software. 
Maintain documentation for the IPNS data acquisition system software. 
Educate scientific users in the use of the IPNS data acquisition systems.  
Develop computer programs for analyzing data. 
Contribute to performance improvements for neutron instruments..  
Plan and conduct neutron scattering experiments and evaluate and interpret
data independently.  Publish results in scientific journals and give
presentations at national/international meetings and conferences.

Closing date for applications for this position is November 20. 

Considerable knowledge is required in neutron scattering, including
development of related computer programs.   Considerable skill is required
in formulating scientific problems and designing high quality advanced
experimental research methodology, in defining areas of research and in
communicating with users and working with users and IPNS scientific
personnel.   This level of information and skill is typically achieved
through a Ph.D. degree in a related field and two to five years experience
doing neutron research, as a postdoctoral appointee or assistant scientist..
