Post Doc Position: Condensed Matter Physics using Pulsed Neutrons at ISIS
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in experimental
condensed matter physics at Johns Hopkins University. The research focuses
on hard condensed matter with strong fluctuations at temperatures much less
than the characteristic energy scale for interactions. Such systems can
display novel composite spin and lattice degrees of freedom that will be
characterized using pulsed neutron scattering. Examples include transition
metal oxides with negative thermal expansion, low dimensional quantum
magnets, and frustrated magnetic materials. Experiments will be conducted
using inelastic neutron scattering instrumentation at the ISIS facility in
the UK where the successful candidate will be stationed. Information about
the ISIS Facility is available at http://www.isis.rl.ac.uk
<http://www.isis.rl.ac.uk/> . The candidate will perform neutron scattering
experiments, develop software for pulsed neutron scattering data analysis,
and disseminate scientific results under the supervision of Prof. C. Broholm
from the Johns Hopkins University and Dr. T. G. Perring from ISIS. A Ph.D.
degree in Physics or a related area is a requirement and prior experience in
the magnetism of condensed matter, neutron scattering, X-ray scattering, and
scientific software development will be an advantage. The position is
renewable annually to a maximum of three years. Candidates should send a CV
and summary of research interests and have three letters of recommendation
sent to Prof. C. Broholm, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Johns Hopkins
University, 3400 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21218. Filling of the
position is contingent on funding approval. Applications will be reviewed
until the position is filled. The Johns Hopkins University is an affirmative
action, equal opportunity employer.
