Postion for a Research Scientist at the ILL (Grenoble, France) 


The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) is an international fundamental research
institute funded by France, Germany and the United Kingdom. Agreements on
scientific collaboration have also been signed with Austria, the Czech
Republic, Italy, Russia, Spain and Switzerland. The Institute operates the
most powerful source of neutrons in the world, a 58 MW reactor, which was
completely refurbished in 1995. The reactor forms the basis for a programme
of research covering a wide variety of fields, supplying neutrons to a broad
range of instruments which are available to scientists from the member
countries. 


ILL currently has an opening for a Research Scientist in its Large Scale
Structures Group. The post represents an excellent opportunity for a young
postdoctoral scientist to develop his/her expertise, broaden his/her
experience and interact with leading scientists from around the world. More
experienced scientists on detachment will also be considered. 


The LSS group comprises a range of instruments designed to carry out studies
on the structure of matter on a scale of 1 to thousands of nanometers. These
include instruments for small-angle scattering, reflectometry, diffraction
from single crystals or one or two-dimensionally ordered materials. The
range of science covered is very broad, from polymer and colloid science
through structural molecular biology to materials science and magnetic
phenomena. 


The successful candidate will be a highly motivated scientist having a PhD.
He/she will be expected to carry out his/her own research programme, as well
as assisting ILL users in conducting their experiments. 


We are particularly interested in candidates with a background in physical
chemistry and an interest in polymer or colloid science. Applicants should
have at least 1 - 2 years post-doctoral experience in the field of neutron
or X-ray small angle scattering. A practical knowledge of computing and an
interest in instrumentation are required. He/She will be involved in the
day-to-day running as well as the longer term development of the D11
small-angle scattering instrument. 


The successful candidate will be offered a fixed-term contract, the duration
of which will under no circumstances exceed five (5) years. In addition to a
competitive salary, certain benefits (reimbursement of removal expenses,
adaptation allowance, etc.) may be offered.
