Position for a Condensed-Matter Scientist at Chalk River, Canada
Located at Chalk River, Canada's neutron beam laboratory provides an
excellent environment for building a research career in condensed-matter
science. The Neutron Program for Materials Research (NPMR) is solidly
funded by the National Research Council (the primary Canadian agency for
strategic R&D), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (which
supports university-based R&D) and by industry clients. A 120 MW research
reactor is our medium-flux source of thermal neutrons, and is expected to
operate until a new neutron beam facility (Canadian Neutron Facility) is
available. The conceptual design of the CNF includes a cold neutron source,
guide hall and a suite of 11 instruments in the initial project. While we
press for a positive decision to fund the CNF, new instruments and methods
are being developed within the current program, to strengthen the neutron
scattering research community and extend the applications of neutron
scattering to new and exciting frontiers. Detailed design engineering is
underway for a neutron reflectometer to be installed on the unused D3 beam
tube at our current neutron source.
We are inviting young scientists in the field of condensed matter science to
apply for a newly-created continuing position with our program. There is a
preference for candidates who will be able to lead an experimental research
program focusing on phenomena that arise at the nanometre scale near
surfaces and interfaces, such as polymeric or bio-molecular conformations,
electrochemistry, functional molecular materials, and magnetic or electronic
nano-layered devices.
The deadline for applications is July 26, 2002.
