The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Project at the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory invites applications for a Neutron Polarization Scientist.
The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science has funded the design
and construction of the SNS, which will provide the most powerful
next-generation short-pulse spallation neutron source in the world for
neutron scattering and related research in broad areas of the physical,
chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences.  The SNS is a
partnership among six DOE national laboratories (Argonne, Brookhaven,
Jefferson, Lawrence Berkeley, Los Alamos, and Oak Ridge), and is
scheduled for completion in 2006.


Responsibilities include ensuring that the designs of neutron scattering
instrumentation being built as part of the SNS Project are compatible
with optimal exploitation of polarized neutrons in these instruments.
Responsibilities also include identification of needs and implementation
of programs for development of equipment for production and analysis of
polarized neutrons for these neutron scattering instruments. Works with
other staff to ensure that designs of SNS instruments are compatible
with the eventual production and use of polarized neutrons in those
instruments. Interacts with other staff and with the user community to
identify needs and specifications for equipment for production,
manipulation, and analysis of polarized neutrons. Develops such
equipment as needed. Interacts with engineering design/drafting
personnel, other scientists, shop personnel, and external suppliers and
contractors.


Successful candidates will have a Ph.D. plus postdoctoral experience in
Physics or related discipline, or equivalent combination of training and
experience involving the production or use of polarized neutrons. Strong
written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team
environment on technically challenging problems required.
