The School of Chemistry at the University of Sydney is one of the main centres for chemical research
and education in Australia having received 18 new ARC Discovery and Linkage grants in 2002 and 15 in
2003, and has access to a comprehensive range of modern research and teaching facilities. The
Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) has neutron scattering facilities and
is in the process of developing $30M of advanced new neutron research capabilities, including powder
and single-crystal neutron diffraction, small-angle scattering and neutron reflectivity, as a part
of the Replacement Research Reactor Project. Recently the College of Science and Technology of the
University of Sydney and ANSTO signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperative research
associated with the creation of the Centre for Structural Biology and Structural Chemistry within
the University of Sydney. This Centre, which involves the Schools of Chemistry and Molecular &
Biosciences and the Electron Microscope Unit, has access to a range of state-of-the-art
instrumentation in small molecule and macromolecule X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction and,
through ANSTO, neutron diffraction and scattering. The Centre also has a heavy involvement in a
variety of international neutron and synchrotron facilities.   

As a result of the MOU we will make a jointly funded appointment in Materials Chemistry. The
successful applicant must develop a collaborative research program between the School of Chemistry
at the University of Sydney and the Bragg Institute (Neutron Scattering Group) at ANSTO and be
active in both institutions. This research will be in materials chemistry, including the use of
neutron diffraction techniques.   

Applicants must demonstrate an outstanding research potential, provide evidence of the skills
required for effective lecturing and practical teaching, have the ability to teach Chemistry at all
levels, and become active in the use and development of IT in teaching. They must have the ability
to communicate effectively in writing and orally and possess a PhD in Chemistry (or related
discipline) and relevant post-doctoral experience.   

The successful applicant is expected to commence in 2003, but the preferred commencement date is at
the start of semester 2, 2003.   

The position is full-time continuing, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation and/or
confirmation period for new appointees. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is
a condition of employment for new appointees. Appointment to this position is subject to the
provisions of the NSW child protection legislation. Relevant criminal history, apprehended violence
orders and prior employment checks, including relevant disciplinary proceedings, will be conducted
on the preferred applicant.

Remuneration Package: $65,771 - $78,056 p.a. (which includes a base salary Lecturer Level B $55,578
