NOMINATIONS FOR THE
CLIFFORD G. SHULL PRIZE IN NEUTRON SCIENCE
The Neutron Scattering Society of America is requesting nomination
packages for the Clifford G. Shull Prize in Neutron Science. The
prize is being given to recognize outstanding research in neutron
science and leadership promoting the North American neutron
scattering community in honor of Clifford G. Shull, who received the
Nobel Prize in 1994 with Bert Brockhouse for seminal developments in
the field of neutron science.
Nature: The prize will consist of a plaque and an honorarium of
$5,000 to be presented at the American Conference on Neutron
Scattering (ACNS). The next ACNS will be hosted by the NIST Center
for Neutron Research, and will be held in the Inn and Conference
Center for the University of Maryland University College in College
Park, MD June 6-10, 2004. Please see the conference web site:
http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/acns. The recipient is expected to present
an address at the conference. A stipend towards travel expenses to
the conference will be paid in addition to the honorarium.
Rules of Eligibility: Consideration shall be given to outstanding
research accomplishments and contributions to the advancement of
neutron science, including developing or supporting the North
American neutron scattering community, through teaching, research,
technical leadership and scientific writings. The award shall be
granted to an individual without regard to race, color, national
origin, sex, religion, age, disability or sexual orientation.
Nomination Procedure: Nominations are solicited from any member of
the NSSA. Nomination packages should include a nomination letter of
not more than 1,000 words from a NSSA member evaluating the nominee's
qualifications and identifying the specific work to be recognized and
how the work has led to the advancement of neutron science. The
nomination package can include up to two additional letters of
support and a copy of the nominee's curriculum vitae. Do not include
reprints of scientific articles, but specific references to
particularly important published work should be made in the
nomination and supporting letters. Nomination packages will be
accepted only electronically in pdf format. The packages should be
sent by e-mail to Professor Rob Briber, President of the NSSA, at
rbriber at umd.edu and should be received no later than November 1, 2003.
A prize committee selected by the officers of NSSA will be
established shortly after the nominations are received to select the
recipient. The recipient will be announced in January 2004. The
prize committee's selection must be endorsed by the NSSA officers.
Additional information on the prize is available on the NSSA web site
at: http://www.neutronscattering.org.
Establishment and Support: The prize was established in 2002 and is
administered by the Neutron Scattering Society of America. The NSSA
is currently soliciting funds from members and industrial sources
toward the endowment of the prize. Individuals or organizations
wishing to contribute to the prize endowment fund should contact
Prof. Dave Belanger, NSSA Treasurer, Physics Dept., University of
California, Santa Cruz, CA 95064 (e-mail: dave at dave.ucsc.edu).
