HAHN MEITNER INSTITUTE, BERLIN
Department of Magnetism
Scientist PH.D.
(Physicist)
NO. SF 2005/3

The Hahn Meitner Institute is a research center of the Federal Republic
of Germany and the land Berlin with about 800 employees working at
Berlin-Wannsee and Berlin-Adlershof. A key activity is basic research on
the structure of condensed matter using neutron scattering at the
research reactor BER II (Berlin-Wannsee) as well as synchrotron
radiation techniques at BESSY (Berlin-Adlershof).

The Hahn-Meitner-Institut (HMI) invites applications for a tenure track
position as an instrument scientist in the area of synchrotron
radiation. The candidate will be the responsible scientist for the PGM
beamline at the undulator UE46 which is operated by the HMI at the
Berlin synchrotron radiation facility BESSY located in Berlin-Adlershof.
The Undulator UE46 provides soft X-rays with exceptionally high
polarisation and brilliance over the photon energy range of 200 to 1800
eV making the PGM beamline one of the world leading beamlines in the
soft X-ray regime. User support (i.e. experiments and data analysis),
further development of the instrumentation of the beamline, and
especially the installation of an additional high-field reflectometer,
are major duties connected with the position.

The department of magnetism is presently sharpening its scientific
profile. One of the pillars of its activities will be an ambitious
research program in the field of magnetism in thin films and
nanostructures with an emphasis on the complementary use of synchrotron
and neutron radiation. Applicants should have a strong scientific
interest in this field and follow their own research program. Extensive
experience in the use of synchrotron radiation and a broad knowledge in
solid state physics, especially in the field of magnetism, are essential.

Remuneration will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and
scientific achievements.
Applications including a full curriculum vitae and two academic
references should be sent under NO. SF 2005/3 to Hahn-Meitner-Institut
Berlin, Abt. Personal und Soziales, Glienicker Str. 100, 14109 Berlin,
Germany (email: personalabteilung at hmi.de). The deadline is 30 April 2005.
For informal inquiries, please contact Prof. Dr. Alan Tennant (phone:
+49-30-8062-2741, e-mail: tennant at hmi.de).
