The NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) is seeking candidates for a 
position as a software engineer in its Research Facility Data 
Acquisition Team.
 
The NCNR is a national user facility that develops and makes available 
to the general scientific community advanced instrumentation for 
materials research using beams of cold neutrons. The laboratory serves 
almost 2000 guest scientists per year with about 29 experiment stations.

Data Acquisition Team specializes in the development and maintenance of 
control electronics and software for neutron scattering instrumentation 
used in materials research.
 
The NCNR is in the process of replacing the data acquisition used on all 
its instruments. The candidate will help develop and deploy new data 
acquisition software for the entire laboratory. This software, called 
ICE (Instrument Control Executive), mediates interactions of users with 
hardware, manages data acquisition, and sequences commands for batch 
execution. Major tasks will involve developing the functionality 
necessary to perform measurements on different experiment stations. The 
candidate will work on a challenging project that involves interaction 
with instrument scientists and laboratory users in a high-availability 
environment.
 
Desirable qualifications include programming in compiled and interpreted 
languages, object-oriented programming techniques, network programming, 
and system administration.
