HAHN MEITNER INSTITUTE, BERLIN
Department of Magnetism
Scientist PH.D.
(Physicist, Chemist)
Reference No. SF 2005/11

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in the field of novel
materials synthesis and characterization to be held at the Magnetism
department of the Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin, Germany. The
Hahn-Meitner-Institut is a German National Laboratory and a member of
the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres and
has about 800 employees. It hosts the Berlin Neutron Scattering Center
(BENSC) (http://www.hmi.de/bensc/), a user facility open to scientists
from all over the world, and runs several instruments at the Berlin
Synchrotron radiation source BESSY
(http://www.hmi.de/bereiche/bessy_en.html). The magnetism department
undertakes world leading research in quantum magnetism, novel materials,
and thin films and nanostructures. A key research focus is on novel
transition metal oxides, including multiferroic materials, CMR
materials, and high temperature superconductors. The successful
candidate will join an international team dedicated to these research
activities and actively participate in this program by taking charge of
the synthesis effort of relevant materials and work in close
collaboration with other members of the group.

Ideally the candidate will hold a PhD in physics or chemistry and will
have experience of solid state synthesis and crystal growth, preferably
using the optical floating zone technique. The Hahn-Meitner-Institut
offers an outstanding range of experimental opportunities and links with
centres of excellence worldwide. State-of-the-art synthesis facilities
are available on-site as well as a full range of standard sample
characterization facilities including X-ray Laue and powder diffraction,
SQUID, and transport and thermal measurement systems.

The Hahn-Meitner-Institut is seeking to increase the quota of women
scientists. Therefore, women are especially encouraged to apply.
Handicapped applicants will be given preference to others of equal
qualification.

The appointment is for three years. The salary is 34.000 EUR gross per
annum. Applicants should send a letter of application, a detailed CV,
two academic references, a list of publications and copies of degrees to
Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin, Abt. Personal und Soziales, Glienicker
Str. 100, D-14109 Berlin, Germany, quoting reference no. SF 2005/11
(email: personalabteilung at hmi.de). The deadline for the application is
three weeks after publication.

For informal inquiries, please contact Dr Dimitri Argyriou (phone
+49-30-8062-3016, e-mail: argyriou at hmi.de).
