SNS-HFIR User Meeting

The meeting of users of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High
Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) will be held at Oak Ridge National
Laboratory on October 11-13, 2005. We anticipate this meeting will
generate enthusiasm for neutron scattering through personal interactions
with SNS and HFIR staff. Scientists and engineers should attend if they
want to learn of the capabilities of SNS and HFIR instruments and offer
feedback on the instruments and user processes. As new instruments
become available at the pulsed Spallation Neutron Source and the
steady-state High Flux Isotope Reactor, interest in these facilities
will dramatically increase by the worldwide scientific community. Now is
the time for biologists, chemists, materials scientists, and physicists
to better understand and appreciate the benefits of what an almost order
of magnitude increase in neutron intensity can mean in terms of reduced
sample size, experiment time, and experiment performance.

Tuesday, October 11, will begin with updates of the SNS, HFIR, and the
Center for Nanoscale Materials Sciences, and be followed by an invited
talk by Shenda Baker on the synergies available for research
interactions at these Oak Ridge National Laboratory facilities. After a
lunchtime poster session featuring SNS and HFIR instruments, parallel
technique sessions [diffraction, quasi-elastic neutron scattering, small
angle neutron scattering, engineering diffraction, inelastic techniques,
and reflectometry] will be held during the afternoon describing the
science performed by these techniques and summarizing the SNS and HFIR
instruments in these categories. An evening contributed poster session
and reception will conclude the day; posters are still being accepted,
see our website http://www.sns.gov/workshops/sns_hfir_users/index.shtml
for more details.

Wednesday, October 12, will include sessions on sample environments and
user policies and practices, and a meeting of the SNS HFIR User Group.
Tours of SNS and HFIR will be given, and a series of Instrument Advisory
Team Meetings for updates on at least the first 5 SNS instruments (see
below for more details).

Thursday, October 13, will feature workshops oriented to new users of
neutron scattering.

Scholarships available to attend the meeting and the new user workshops:
Scholarships are available [up to $500 maximum plus your registration
fees will be paid] for limited numbers of graduate students and early
career faculty at U.S. academic institutions to attend the meeting and
one of the workshops held on the morning of October 13. The workshops
will be directed to new users of neutron scattering techniques. Details
are available on the workshop website. These scholarships are provided
through the generosity of Oak Ridge Associated Universities, the Joint
Institute for Neutron Sciences, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Office of University Relations.

Instrument Advisory Team Meetings: Instrument Advisory Teams (IATs)
were formed around each of the first five SNS instruments by prospective
users several years ago. It is expected that members of these teams
will now form the nucleus of a group of "friendly" users who will aid in
the commissioning process of these instruments. The SNS/HFIR User
Meeting is an excellent opportunity to learn about the detailed status
and plans for these instruments and for additional interested
researchers to join IATs. Topics for discussion will include the
commissioning schedule and will begin the process of identifying initial
experiments that may be carried out during the "friendly user" period.

More information: The agenda, list of confirmed speakers, details of
the IAT and new user workshops, and other meeting information are
available on the Workshop website at
http://www.sns.gov/workshops/sns_hfir_users/index.shtml
