Indiana University Cyclotron Facility - Director of Operations
The Indiana University Cyclotron Facility seeks a Director of
Operations. IUCF is a multi-purpose laboratory on the campus of Indiana
University that pursues both research and technical service missions
with a staff of roughly 130 FTE's, organized into six operating
divisions, and an annual budget of approximately $15M. The laboratory
operates a 200 MeV cyclotron complex that delivers beams for use in
cancer therapy at the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute (MPRI) and
for studies of radiation effects on materials and biological systems.
It is constructing an NSF-funded Low Energy Neutron Source (LENS) that
will provide beams for neutron scattering research in nuclear, materials
and biosciences, as well as for neutron scattering instrument
development. It houses active research groups in experimental nuclear
physics, nuclear chemistry, accelerator physics and medical physics, and
develops state-of-the-art instrumentation for these basic research
pursuits. The laboratory has a long history of successful completion of
innovative multi-million dollar technical development projects, over and
above the cyclotrons and LENS, including: a proton storage ring with
electron beam cooling; spin-polarized ion sources and polarized targets;
an electromagnetic calorimeter for the STAR detector at the Relativistic
Heavy Ion Collider; gantries for patient treatment at MPRI;
sophisticated nuclear and particle physics detector and spectrometer
arrays with state-of-the-art readout electronics. Further information
about the laboratory's scope and mission may be found at
http://www.iucf.indiana.edu/ .
The Director of Operations will be responsible for the oversight and
coordination of the six operating divisions within the laboratory
responsible for day-to-day operations and new construction projects. The
Director of Operations (DOO) will report directly to the Laboratory
Director and will work with the six Division Heads to identify and
implement the most efficient allocation of resources among various
research and service projects, to accomplish Laboratory missions and
priorities established by the Laboratory Director. The DOO will review
project proposals, evaluate technical components and identify resource
needs and advise the Director regarding the facility's ability to
undertake proposed projects to effectively complete the work. The DOO
will be responsible for recommending the development of new personnel
resources, when these may be needed to ensure that the laboratory's
mission is effectively carried out. The DOO will direct project planning
and quality assurance functions for the facility.
Qualifications: BS in Business, Science or Engineering, or MBA, plus 7
years
experience in scientific-, engineering- or technological-management.
7 years supervisory experience
7 years project/construction management experience
Proven strong leadership/motivational and communication skills.
Experience in the areas of ISO and FDA Regulations is highly desirable.
Indiana University and the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility are
Equal Employment Opportunity employers.
