HAHN MEITNER INSTITUTE, BERLIN
Department of Magnetism
Two Postdoc positions, one PhD student

Postdoc Magnetism of Thin Films and Nanostructures (ref. no. SF 2006/6)

The dept. of Magnetism invites applications for a postdoctoral position.
The successful candidate is expected to build up his own research
profile in magnetism of thin films and nanostructures using laboratory
methods such as magneto-optical Kerr-effect (MOKE), synchrotron
radiation (XMCD, XRMS) and neutron scattering techniques. In particular,
she/he will be engaged in experiments at one of the world leading soft
X-ray beam lines, the HMI undulator beam line UE46-PGM at BESSY.
A broad knowledge in solid state physics, especially in the field of
magnetism, as well as experience in the use of synchrotron and neutron
radiation is required.

Postdoc Quantum Magnetism (ref. no. SF 2006/7)

The dept. of Magnetism invites applications for a postdoctoral position
in quantum magnetism. The successful candidate will undertake elastic
and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on low dimensional and
frustrated quantum magnets, physical properties measurements connected
with quantum phase transitions, data analysis for time-of-flight neutron
scattering data as well as testing theories of universality for field
induced quantum phase transitions. She/he will do modelling of quantum
behaviour of strongly correlated magnetic systems and comparing those
models with experiments.
Good knowledge of magnetism and condensed matter physics, experience in
neutron scattering, understanding of quantum theory of solids as well as
good programming and data analysis skills are required.

PhD student Quantum Magnetism (ref. no. SF 2006/8)

The thesis work will be on experimental application of neutron
scattering to test theories of universality in quantum magnets
undergoing field induced quantum phase transitions. Measurements will
focus on frustrated systems where new quantum ground states can emerge.
Diploma in physics or equivalent.

Deadline for all positions is 7 April, 2006. Applicants should send a
letter of application, a detailed CV, two academic references, a list of
publications and copies of degrees to Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin, Abt.
Personal und Soziales, Glienicker Str. 100, D-14109 Berlin, Germany,
quoting the respective reference no. (email: personalabteilung at hmi.de).
