The Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a post-doctoral researcher
with demonstrated expertise in the area of magnetic structure refinement
of neutron diffraction data. The primary project of the successful
candidate would include experimental studies and modeling of the
magnetic properties of materials of interest (e.g. geological, advanced
materials, etc.) under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature
using new state of the art high pressure facilities at the Spallation
Neutron Source, the High Flux Isotope Reactor at ORNL and other neutron
scattering facilities around the world. Responsibilities include
conducting independent research using neutron scattering as a primary
research tool, particularly the collection and analysis of neutron
diffraction data collected from magnetic systems under extreme
conditions of temperature and pressure. The position would be funded
for one year, with renewal for a second year possible. Salaries will be
competitive.
Major duties and responsibilities include:
* Conceive and design experiments on materials in high pressure
high temperature environments. Primarily the position involves
performing magnetic and nuclear structure refinement using well
established analysis code; experience with high pressure techniques is
not a requirement.
* Collaborate with scientists in Oak Ridge National Laboratory
and other research institutions to fabricate samples for neutron
scattering experiments
* Travel to other neutron sources to execute neutron scattering
experiments and analyze the experimental data
* Publish research results in scientific journals
* Assist SNAP instrument scientist and the design team to ensure
that the design meets the scientific requirements
Candidates with a recent Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry,
Geochemistry/Geophysics or related field and a strong background in
powder refinement techniques, particularly with respect to magnetic
scattering, will be considered. Experience with high pressure techniques
is desirable, but not required. Strong written and oral communication
skills and the desire to work in a team environment on scientifically
challenging problems are required.
Please reference the position title and number (ORNL07-11-SNS) when
corresponding about this position.
To apply, please send curriculum vitae, a brief description of research
accomplishments and interest, and contact information for three
