PhD fellowship on neutron scattering studies of actinide materials
available at the Institute for Transuranium Elements (ITU), Karlsruhe,
Germany.

Relevant information are published on the ITU website:
http://itu.jrc.ec.europa.eu/index.php?id=96#51
The call is open to candidates of EU Member States, Candidate Countries
and Associated States.

Deadline for applications: 7 January 2007

Reference C20-2007-01
To investigate the microscopic basic properties of actinide materials one
of the most powerful techniques is that of neutron scattering. Themes of
the present research effort are complex magnetic ordering and the
interplay between magnetism and superconductivity and possible
occurrence of magnetically mediated superconductivity in 5f electron
systems. A range of different experiments can be envisaged, including
both elastic and inelastic scattering to augment the programme at ITU,
Karlsruhe, where many of the samples are prepared and bulk
measurements performed.
The experimental work will require frequent long term stays at the
Institut Laue Langevin, the world’s premier neutron scattering facility,
which will give ample time for learning this technique and becoming an
advanced user during the 3 years of the Ph. D.
Required skills University degree in Physics, background knowledge in
solid state
physics, and strong interest on the basics of magnetism of f electrons and
neutron scattering.
