The Chemical Sciences Division (CSD), the Center for Structural and
Molecular Biology (CSMB), and the Neutron Scattering Science Division
(NSSD) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) (http://www.ornl.gov)
have an immediate opening for a post-doctoral research associate.
Applications are sought from highly creative and motivated individuals
who will join an interdisciplinary team to work on development of
functionalized polymeric scaffolds and their incorporation into
bio-mimetic membranes. Our biological and chemical synthesis and
characterization capabilities are state-of-the-art and films will be
characterized by neutron reflectivity at the Spallation Neutron Source
(SNS). The position will be funded for two years. Salaries will be
competitive.
Major duties and responsibilities include:
Serve as primary researcher developing attachment and
surface-modification protocols for amino acids and oligopeptides from
solution onto polymeric substrates.
Initiate or maintain a scientific program involving these thin films,
including characterization using the neutron reflectometers at SNS and
the synthesis and characterization facilities at the Center for
Nanophase Materials Science.
Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program
requirements.
Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of
values and ethics.
Experience and Education Requirements:
A Ph.D. within the last five years or soon to be completed in Material
Sciences, Biochemistry, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field is
required. The ideal candidate will have experience in surface chemistry
in such areas as the reaction of amino acids and oligopeptides in
solution with deposited surface layers, protein-surface interactions,
and synthesis of oligopeptides. Experience in polymer synthesis and
handling and benchtop characterization techniques would also be
valuable. Previous experience in either neutron or x-ray scattering is
desirable, but not required. The candidate should be self-motivated and
be able to participate creatively in refining program directions.
Presentation and publication of scientific results in peer-reviewed
journals is expected. The candidate must have good oral and written
communication skills, and the ability to work in a team and interact
effectively with colleagues.
Please reference the position title and number (ORNL07-16-NSSD) when
corresponding about this position.
To apply, please send curriculum vitae, a brief description of research
accomplishments and interest, and contact information for three

This position will be offered through the Oak Ridge Institute for
Science and Education (ORISE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory Postdoctoral
Research Associates program
(http://www.orau.gov/orise/edu/ornl/ornl-pd/ornlintr.htm
<http://www.orau.gov/orise/edu/ornl/ornl-pd/ornlintr.htm> ). The
program is open to all qualified U.S. and non-U.S. citizens without
regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, national origin, physical or
mental disability, or status as a Vietnam-era veteran or disabled
veteran.
