Post Doctoral Position: Neutron Scattering at High Magnetic Fields

 

Highly qualified candidates with experience in the use and/or design of
neutron or X-ray scattering instrumentation are sought for a post doctoral
position in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Johns Hopkins
University. The successful candidate will participate in the conceptual
design of an instrument for neutron scattering above 30 Tesla at the
Spallation Neutron Source called ZEEMANS. The instrument shall enable a wide
range of experiments including single crystal and powder diffraction,
reflectivity, SANS, and inelastic scattering under the unique high magnetic
field conditions of a series connected hybrid DC magnet, which is being
developed by the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. The successful
candidate will also participate in high magnetic field experiments using
existing instrumentation with an aim to explore new possibilities for
science using neutrons at high fields. 

 

Required qualifications are a Ph. D. degree in physics or another materials
related science and significant experience with the design, maintenance,
and/or use of neutron or X-ray scattering instrumentation. Excellent
communication skills are essential as is the ability to collaborate
effectively. Experience with any of the following activities is desirable:
Monte-Carlo simulation of scattering instrumentation, sample environment
equipment including high magnetic fields and low temperatures, CAD assisted
mechanical design, scientific software development, procurement, and project
management. The post doctoral position is for two years and will be located
at the Spallation Neutron Source in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. If funding for the
construction phase is obtained there will be opportunities for continued
involvement in the project as an instrument scientist.
