The Macromolecular and Microstructure Sciences team at the NIST Center for Neutron
Research (NCNR) is seeking candidates for a small angle scattering Instrument Scientist
position. The team is responsible for operating two 30-m long pinhole geometry Small
Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) instruments and one ultra-SANS (USANS) instrument
(http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/programs/sans/sans_inst.html). Combined, these instruments
span four orders of magnitude in Q-space corresponding to structural features in
materials ranging from 1nm to over 20,000 nm. The position will allow the successful
candidate an exciting opportunity to develop a strong scientific program taking advantage
of this world class neutron instrumentation within the context of a major national
laboratory. Collaborations with visiting scientists, NCNR staff, and other scientists at
NIST are nurtured and highly encouraged providing a rich and rewarding scientific
atmosphere.

The position requires a Ph.D. in Materials Science or related field and excellent
experimental, communication, and interpersonal skills. Experience in microstructure or
macromolecular structure characterization using x-ray or neutron diffraction techniques
is highly desirable. Strong programming skills are also a plus. Responsibilities
include visiting researchers in conducting experiments, developing an independent
research program, and participating in instrument maintenance and development activities,
including software development and planning for future upgrades. Appointment will
initially be for two years with the possibility of extension for outstanding performance.
Salary is in the range from $57,000 to $66,000 depending on qualifications and
experience. Expressions of interest along with a resume should be sent (preferably
electronically) to:
