The Hahn-Meitner-Institut invites applications for the position of a
post-doctoral research scientist who will design and optimise neutron
scattering instrumentation using advanced computational methods.
The Hahn-Meitner-Institut is a German National Laboratory and a member
of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres.
It hosts the Berlin Neutron Scattering Centre (BENSC)
(http://www.hmi.de/bensc/), a user facility open to scientists from all
over the world. To probe the structure and dynamics of solids and
liquids, BENSC provides scientists with state-of-the-art neutron
scattering research opportunities.
The position is open to scientists who ideally hold a PhD in a physics
or a related discipline and have a background in scientific
instrumentation and software development. Knowledge of Monte Carlo
simulation methods as well as experience in neutron or X-ray scattering
is advantageous.
The department SF1 (Methods and Instruments) successfully operates the
cold-neutron triple-axis instrument V2/FLEX with an international user
community active in the fields of low-energy structural excitations,
strongly correlated electron systems, heavy-fermion physics and quantum
magnetism. The innovative instrument development program aims at further
enhancing the instrument capabilities. Initial work associated with the
position will focus on optimization of neutron optical components
including devices for polarized neutron work. Numerical simulation
software tools will be applied with particular emphasis on the
instrument performance with respect to spectrometer resolution. The work
will further include development of data acquisition and visualisation
software for an envisaged multi-analyzer option for the secondary
spectrometer.
The successful candidate will also participate in the research work
associated with the triple axis spectrometer and collaborate with
renowned guest scientists from all over the world in a broad variety of
subjects in the framework of the BENSC user program. She/He is
encouraged to conduct her/his own research programme in the field of
condensed matter physics using neutron scattering facilities at BENSC in
general.
The appointment is for three years. Applicants should send a letter of
application, CV, copies of diploma and PhD certificates and a list of
publications to Hahn-Meitner-Institut, Abt. Personal und Soziales,
Glienicker Str. 100, D-14109 Berlin, (e-mail: personalabteilung at hmi.de)
before 6 June 2007 quoting reference No. SF2007/7.
For further details about the position please contact Dr. Catherine
Pappas (e-mail: pappas at hmi.de) or Dr. Klaus Habicht (e-mail:
habicht at hmi.de).
