ARCS Instrument Scientist
Summary
The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
invites applications for a ARCS Instrument Scientist. SNS is the most
powerful short-pulse spallation neutron source in the world. This unique
facility provides opportunities for up to 2000 researchers each year
from universities, national labs, and industry for basic and applied
research and technology development. The diverse fields of study include
materials science, magnetic materials, polymers and complex fluids,
chemistry, and biology. Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office
of Science, SNS began operations in June 2006.
Responsibilities & Qualifications
Successful candidate will develop a new world-leading capabilities
within the ORNL Neutron Scattering Science Division (NSSD) for condensed
matter science research using time of flight inelastic neutron
scattering. Ensure that the wide Angular Range Chopper Spectrometer
(ARCS) at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) is capable of supporting
leading edge scientific experiments.
Major duties and responsibilities are listed below:
* Participates in the commissioning and continual improvement of the
ARCS spectrometer.
* Conducts leading edge scientific research using neutron scattering.
The areas of research may include, but are not limited to soft condensed
matter physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science.
* Works with a team of scientists, including scientific associates and
post docs, to operate the ARCS spectrometer.
* Participates in the evaluation of the performance and effectiveness of
the ARCS spectrometer in supporting world class science and participates
in its maintenance and upgrades.
* Acts as a local contact for condensed matter science research in the
Neutron Scattering Science Division (NSSD) neutron scattering user
program, supports the neutron scattering program and develops links with
the neutron scattering user community.
* Supports the neutron scattering users program on the ARCS
spectrometer.
* Works with scientists at NSSD, ORNL, and external institutions, in the
development and conduction of collaborative scientific research
programs.
* Directs the work of one or more postdoctoral assignees and/or
scientific associates.
* Ensures compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality
program requirements including the ORNL Integrated Safety Management
System.
* Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation
of laboratory values and ethics.
The successful candidates must have: Ph.D. in any of the Physical
Sciences plus postdoctoral experience. Strong background in condensed
matter physics or materials science as evidenced by an outstanding
record of publications in top peer-reviewed journals. Strong
interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills. Desire to work in
a team environment on technically challenging problems. Previous
experience in inelastic neutron scattering from condensed matter is
highly desirable.
