HAHN-MEITNER INSTITUTE, BERLIN
Department of Materials Science
Scientist PH.D. (Materials Scientist)
SF 2007/24
The Hahn-Meitner Institute is a research centre of the Federal Republic
of Germany and the land Berlin with about 800 employees working at
Berlin-Wannsee and Berlin-Adlershof. A key activity is basic research on
the structure of condensed matter using neutron scattering at the
research reactor BER II (Berlin-Wannsee) and synchrotron radiation
techniques at BESSY (Berlin-Adlershof). The Hahn Meitner Institute hosts
the Berlin Neutron Scattering Center (BENSC), a user facility open to
scientists from all over the world as well as operating a series of
leading instruments at BESSY for the study of magnetic ordering.
We invite applications for a materials scientist position to support
international users on the energy dispersive synchrotron materials
science beamline EDDI (Energy Dispersive DIfraction) at the storage ring
BESSY II. The successful candidate will also work on the scientific and
technical enhancements of the beamline experimental station and the
implementation of complementary measuring techniques (e.g. mechanical
testing methods) for materials characterization, in particular for the
analysis of residual stresses. It is also expected that the successful
candidate deals with research projects concerning methodical questions
and problems related to materials sciences in close cooperation with
partners from university and industry in the fields of residual stress-,
texture- and microstructure analysis of technical materials and
components. Furthermore fundraising of third-party funds (DFG, BMBF,
industrial cooperations) in the above stated research areas is mandatory.
The position is open to confirmed scientists who hold a PhD (e.g. in
materials sciences, mechanical engineering, crystallography). Profound
knowledge is required in the field of X-ray diffraction, in particular
energy dispersive diffraction, experience in the analysis and the
evaluation of residual stresses, crystallographic textures and the
microstructure of technical materials as well as extensive knowledge in
the field of materials engineering. For the technical upgrading of the
peripheral instrumentation of the EDDI working group knowledge and
experience in construction and dimensioning of mechanical/technical
systems is mandatory.
Depending on the qualifications of the applicant, recruitment on a
two-year probation period with an option for a permanent position is
possible. Applications including a full curriculum vitae and two
academic references should be sent under NO. SF 2007/24 to
Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin, Abt. Personal und Soziales, Glienicker
Str. 100, 14109 Berlin, Germany (email: personalabteilung at hmi.de). The
deadline is 15 October 2007. For informal inquiries, please contact
Prof. Dr. Christoph Genzel (phone: +49-30-6392-5771, email: genzel at hmi.de).
