RESEARCH STAFF POSITION, SMALL ANGLE SCATTERING
Polymers Division
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

Applications are invited from qualified candidates for a research staff
position in the area of small angle scattering (x-rays, neutrons, light) in
the Electronics Materials Group of the Polymers Division, at the National
Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland. More
information on polymers and electronics materials research at NIST can be
found at www.nist.gov/polymers.

Responsibilities of this position include: (1) planning and directing an
ongoing project on the use of small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) to measure
the critical dimensions and quality of nanoscale structures fabricated by
the semiconductor industry; (2) identifying and leading new project areas in
the development of small-angle scattering, reflectivity, and diffraction;
(3) fostering collaborations within NIST and with U.S. industry and other
Federal agencies; and (4) scheduling the operation, maintaining hardware,
and enhancing the capabilities of the SAXS and high resolution diffraction
facilities in the Polymers Division.

A qualified applicant will have: (1) demonstrated experience in planning and
conducting research in the use of x-rays for material characterization
including
instrument design and fabrication, modeling and quantitative interpretation
of data from x-ray diffraction and reflectivity measurements; (2) strong
communication skills (speaking, writing); (3) demonstrated ability in
teamwork and in working with others; (4) expert knowledge in the dynamical
theory of x-ray diffraction; and (5) expert knowledge in polymer science,
colloid and interface science, or related field.

The applicant will be evaluated, in addition to the qualifications listed
above, on their potential to become a world class expert in x-ray scattering
and diffraction theory and its application to leading scientific problems;
and on their ability to identify new research topics, to define workable
research approaches to achieve the technical goals, and to develop
strategies to acquire necessary resources.

The position is initially a two-year appointment, with potential for a
permanent appointment. U.S. citizenship is required. A Ph.D. in physical
science or engineering is desired. Salary range: $58,206 to $127,442
(Physical Scientist ZP-1301-III/IV), commensurate with experience.
Applicants should send a resume and three references (names and contact
information only) by post or e-mail to Dr. Wen-li Wu, NIST Polymers
Division, 100 Bureau Drive, MS 8541, Gaithersburg, MD 20899,
wenli.wu at nist.gov. Review of applications will begin May 5, 2008, and will
continue until the position is filled.

NIST, a bureau of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is an Equal Opportunity
Employer
