ESS-Bilbao-Initiative issues an open call for collaboration leading to a
modernized design of the ESS Baseline.

A call for international collaboration leading to an up to date design of
the European Spallation Source accelerator and target systems has been
issued the last 23 September at Riga by the ESS-Bilbao team within the
recently held ESS-Scandinavia-Third Round Table Meeting. The announcement
comes into line with recent efforts carried out by the ESS-Bilbao technical
team geared towards the preparation of a new baseline design for the
accelerator which profits from major advances that have been registered in
recent years within accelerator science and technology.

Work carried out at Bilbao for the last few years helped to pave the way
towards, shorter, energy-efficient, accelerator structures that rely mostly
upon cutting edge superconducting cavities technologies. The latter have now
come to age and constitute the prime proton accelerator structures for beam
energies beyond a few tens of megaelectronvolts. The benefits of going into
a mostly superconducting proton accelerator stems from its lesser
environmental impact as well as from a considerable increases in machine
reliability. First, because of the wide use of superconducting cavities, the
machine length could be largely reduced if compared to the current
ESS-Scandinavia and ESS-Hungary Baseline Designs (from 632 m down to 350 m).
Also, electricity consumption is significantly lowered within
superconducting structures with respect o normal conducting copper
structures where about half of the power is wasted as heat which needs to be
eliminated. Second, superconducting cavities are by design highly modular
structures which enables the action of compensation mechanisms which make
the accelerator highly reliable.

Activities leading to an optimal choice of target systems run concurrently
to accelerator work and a joint ESS-B/ SNS mini-workshop of target issues
will be held at Bilbao the next 1st and 2nd October 2008.

ESS-B calls to all those interested in getting involved in the preparation
of a modernized baseline for the coming European Spallation Source to attend
a kick-off meeting to be held at Bilbao the 27th, 28th November 2008.

All those interested in attending any of those events, please contact Ms.
Ugidos (maugidos at essbilbao.com).
