ESS-BILBAO ANNOUNCES AN INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP TO BE HELD ON TECHNOLOGIES
RELATING TO SPALLATION SOURCES
· Opportunity for top international experts to discuss accelerator
and target technologies
· The meeting will be held in March next year in Bilbao
The ESS-Bilbao consortium has announced, an International Workshop held in
Bilbao, in March 2009, on the current challenges and future prospects for
accelerator and target technologies. Top international experts in
accelerator and target technologies are expected to attend.
The aim of the workshop is to identify the day-to-day challenges faced by
experts in this type of technology and to analyse the prospects for the
future of this technology, with the ultimate aim of developing new,
innovative accelerator and target technologies to make progress in the
design and construction of state-of-the-art Spallation Neutron Sources.
The International Advisory committee is made up of twenty scientists from
major International Centres such as CERN, SNS, ISIS, among others. The head
of the local organising committee and Interim Project Manager of the ESS-B
consortium, Cristina Oyón, considers that the Workshop is an opportunity to
discuss the current and future technological challenges with top
international experts in this field.
Oyón declared that, For ESS-B, it is very important to be up to date in the
development of technologies that will allow progress to be made in the
design and construction of the future Spallation Neutron Source to be built
in Zamudio.
The European Spallation Source is a large scientific infrastructure that
will allow the large-scale production of neutrons. With an investment
estimated at 1300 million euros, the ESS-Bilbao project expects to generate
600 permanent jobs plus the 4000 people who may use the infrastructure on an
annual basis. The ESS is one of 35 major European technology infrastructures
included in the VII R&D Framework Programme of the European Union.
Some of the major scientific applications of the Spallation Source include
molecular biology, material physics, medicine, automotive, aeronautics and
electronics, among others. The function of the Spallation Stores is to
produce neutrons that penetrate matter providing precise information on its
atomic structure.
