Los Alamos Neutron Science Center Call for Proposals
for Run Cycle Beginning in June 2009
You are invited to submit a proposal to apply for beam time at the
Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) for the run cycle
scheduled to begin in June 2009. Please note the different deadlines
for each facility.
Nuclear Science/WNR
The deadline for submitting the proposals is 6:00 p.m. (1800)
Mountain Standard Time, Monday, March 2, 2009. Successful proposals
will be scheduled during the period from June through December 2009.
Lujan Center Neutron Scattering Center
First Call: Deadline for submitting the proposals is 6:00 p.m.
(1800) Mountain Standard Time, Monday, March 23, 2009. Successful
proposals will be scheduled during the period from June through
September 2009.
Second Call: Call for proposals will start on June 1, 2009. Deadline
for submitting the proposals is 6:00 p.m. (1800) Mountain Standard
Time, Monday, July 20, 2009. Successful proposals will be scheduled
during the period from September through December 2009.
Any proposals submitted after the due date will not be reviewed by
the Program Advisory Committees and must be resubmitted for the
following run cycle or as an out-of-cycle, fast access proposal.
Fast access proposals will be accepted throughout and if successfully
reviewed will be scheduled when possible.
Instruments/flight paths available in the current call for proposals
are:
NUCLEAR SCIENCE / WNR FLIGHT PATHS
1. Target 1 (Low-energy neutron source)
a. Flight path 5 Fission and other experiments
b. Flight path 14 (DANCE) capture reactions, fission, g-ray
measurements
c. Flight path 12 Fundamental physics flight path
2. Target 2 (Proton irradiations): (Blue Room) Radiation effects,
Isotope production, Lead Slowing-Down Spectrometer, PSR beam, linac beam
3. Target 4 (High-energy neutron source):
a. Flight Path 90L Fission, charged particle reactions
b. Flight Path 30L ICE House, single event effects
c. Flight path 15L 20 m and 90 m
d. Flight path 15R Few-body physics
e. Flight path 30R FIGARO, (n,z) reactions
f. Flight path 60R GEANIE
Because of their impact on the overall user program, proposals for
sole use experiments (i.e., those that require dedicated facility
operation, such as PSR beam to Target 2 and other than 800 MeV proton
beam) should be discussed with the management of WNR so that policies
associated with such experiments and the prospect of them being
accommodated can be explained.
LUJAN NEUTRON SCATTERING CENTER FLIGHT PATHS
Polarized Beam Reflectometer (Asterix)
Filter Difference Spectrometer (FDS)
High-Pressure Preferred Orientation Diffractometer (HIPPO)
Low Q Diffractometer (LQD)
Neutron Powder Diffractometer (NPDF)
Protein Crystallography Station (PCS)
High-Resolution Chopper Spectrometer (Pharos)
Spectrometer for Materials Research at Temperature and Stress (SMARTS)
Surface Profile Analysis Reflectometer (SPEAR)
Proposals for the following instruments will be accepted, although
user support will be very limited:
Single Crystal Diffractometer (SCD)
High Intensity Powder Diffractometer (HIPD)
Proposal Guidance and Submission
Proposals must be submitted using the process on the LANSCE website.
Only proposals submitted in this manner will be accepted.
-To access the proposal submission site, go to the LANSCE home page,
http://lansce.lanl.gov/.
-From there, click on the appropriate facility (Lujan or WNR) tab
then select “Submit a proposal for beam time”.
-Step-by-step instructions can be found on the Proposal Home web page.
Classified proposals must be submitted in hard copy. They should be
submitted to:
Los Alamos National Laboratory
Mail Station 5000
LANSCE User Office c/o MS H803
Los Alamos, NM 87545
or hand carried to TA-53, Bldg. 1, room D108.
Should you have any questions or require assistance, please contact
the LANSCE User Office by e-mail at lansce_users at lanl.gov or by
telephone at (505) 665-1010.
NPAC/MPAC
The LANSCE Nuclear Science Program Advisory Committee (NPAC) and
Materials Program Advisory Committee (MPAC) will meet in April to
review and rate submissions. Proposal status and beam time
notifications will be sent out by early May.
For second call proposal submissions, the MPAC will meet in August to
review and rate them. Proposal status and beam time notifications
will be sent out by late August.
