Instrument Responsible, Materials Diffractometer
NIST Center for Neutron Research
National Institute of Standards and Technology
The NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) is seeking a research scientist
in the field of neutron powder diffraction. Their primary responsibilities
will be in the design, development and operation of a new high intensity
diffractometer. The NCNR is one of the world's leading neutron facilities
with 24 operating instruments, serving over 220 research participants and
resulting in around 330 papers per year. The materials diffractometer is
being built as part of a substantial expansion on these current facilities
including a new cold guide hall.
The objective of the new high intensity neutron diffractometer is to provide
the rapid collection of structural and magnetic information at long
wavelengths. Its applications are expected to be broad and include topics
from magnetic structure determination to the study of in-situ chemical
reactions. It will compliment measurements current available on the high
resolution powder neutron diffractometer, the residual stress
diffractometer, as well as the suite of triple axis instruments.
The position is open to scientists who hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials
Science, Physics or related fields with excellent experimental,
communication and interpersonal skills. Experience in instrument design and
development at large facilities is highly desirable.
In addition to instrument development, the candidate will be expected to
establish a strong scientific research program taking advantage of both the
high intensity and high resolution diffractometers at NCNR, as well as its
many other instruments. They will be expected to take an active
participation in the user program including the initiation of collaborations
with visiting scientists and NCNR staff. Expressions of interest along with
a resume should be sent (preferably electronically) to:
