This is an invitation to all members of the long length scale
scattering community to join in on a discussion at ICNS 2009 of a new
small-angle pulsed neutron scattering instrument at Los Alamos
National Laboratory, Manuel Lujan, Jr. Neutron Scattering Center and
to form an Instrument Advisory Team to develop a letter of intent
(LOI) to realize the instrument. The LOI will lead to a white paper
pre-proposal followed by a full proposal for review by BES.
Time and place: Tuesday, 5 May, 10-12 AM Room 200C.
Contacts: Rex P. Hjelm, hjelm at lanl.gov & Monika A. Hartl, hartl at lanl.gov
Background:
We propose to build on three decades of experience with the
time-of-flight (TOF) low-Q method and the conclusions of two recent
strategic planning workshops addressing some of the needs for the
low-Q measurement,1-2 to rethink designs for this class of
instrument. The driving factors in considering new designs include:
o Current upgrade plans at Lujan and the second target station
at SNS, both of which promise substantially improved brightness of
cold, pulsed neutron sources at source frequencies beneficial to the
broad bandwidth TOF technique.
o A need for improved background, optics, data acquisition
rates and instrument flexibility.
o The expressed desire of the user community to provide for
advanced sample environments and to do different types of
measurements simultaneously.
o Taking full advantage of the wide Q-domain of the broad
bandwidth TOF method.
o Taking advantage of the unique opportunities afforded by the
time structure of the pulsed neutron source in pulse-probe
measurements.
o The development of polarization and spin-echo techniques to
encode ultra low-Q, do low-energy spectroscopy within the domain of
the low-Q technique and quantifying nuclear spin incoherence.
Agenda:
There will be short presentations touching on each of the above
topics, followed by an open discussion on the current and future
needs of the user community and how to best achieve them. We will
also solicit volunteers and nominations for the members of an
Instrument Advisory Committee and set up an action plan to draft a
LOI to BES to develop a new SANS at Lujan.
