The Paul Scherrer Institute is with 1300 employees the largest research centre for the natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland and a worldwide leading user laboratory. Its research activities are concentrated on the three main topics of solid-state physics, energy and environmental research as well as human health.

The group Material Science and Simulations (MSS) performs research in the structural and mechanical properties of metals, alloys and composites using in-situ testing facilities at the Swiss Light Source (SLS) and at the Neutron Spallation Source (SINQ), meanwhile exploiting synergies with computational material science.

MSS opens for the duration of two years a

Postdoctoral Fellow in Material Sciences

Your tasks

You will perform research on advanced metallic alloys for high-temperature applications and carry out in-situ mechanical testing during neutron and X-ray diffraction. You will work closely together with the responsible beam scientists of the neutron strain scanner POLDI for the development and implementation of an oven for in-situ mechanical testing. You will carry out in-situ experiments in collaboration with several research groups of PSI, EPFL and EMPA that perform research on high-temperature alloys, analyze the results and write common publications.

Your profile

- University degree with PhD in experimental material science or engineering with an emphasis on structural and mechanical properties
- Experience in the field of X-ray and neutron diffraction
- Good communication and writing skills in English
- You enjoy working in a multidisciplinary group with numerous international collaborations
