**The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is 
Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using 
neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world, 
reliably delivering intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific 
instruments. The Institute welcomes 1700 visiting scientists per year to 
carry out world-class research in solid-state physics, crystallography, 
soft matter, biology, chemistry and fundamental physics. Funded 
primarily by its three founder members: France, Germany and the United 
Kingdom, the ILL has also signed scientific collaboration agreements 
with 10 other European countries. The Science Division currently has a 
vacancy for a:

*RESEARCH SCIENTIST (**Materials science & Engineering)** **- m/f*

Working within the *Diffraction Group (DIF)* you will be co-responsible 
for the instrument SALSA, a world-class diffractometer dedicated to the 
non-destructive determination of residual stresses deep inside materials 
and engineering components (http://www.ill.fr/YellowBook/SALSA). The 
instrument is used for materials science and engineering, as well as 
industrial research and development.
Most of the work performed on SALSA makes use of the resources of our 
Facility for Materials Engineering (FaME38), which provides stress rigs 
and equipment for the precise mapping of engineering components.
You will be expected to assist ILL’s visiting scientists in conducting 
their experiments on diffraction instruments, participate in the 
development and operation of SALSA, make your expertise available to 
industrial users, and carry out your own active research programme.

/Qualifications and experience:/
PhD in physics, materials science, engineering or a related field.
We are particularly interested in highly motivated candidates with 
experience in materials science, physics or engineering and practical 
skills in instrumentation, sample preparation and experimentation.
The work on the instrument SALSA is extremely varied and offers an 
opportunity for a resourceful candidate to develop new techniques for 
extending the range of applications available.
The post represents an excellent opportunity for young postdoctoral 
scientists to develop their expertise, broaden their experience and 
interact with leading scientists from around the world. Applications 
from more experienced scientists who are able to obtain a secondment 
period from their home institute will also be considered.
