The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for an experienced scientist to lead the development of neutron scattering instruments and techniques for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) within the Neutron Sciences Directorate.  With the United States' highest flux reactor-based neutron source for condensed matter research (HFIR) and the world's most intense pulsed, accelerator-based neutron source (SNS), ORNL is becoming the world's foremost center for neutron science. Research at these facilities encompasses the physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences and will provide opportunities for up to 2000 researchers each year from industry, research facilities, and universities all over the world. Purpose:
We seek a candidate who can lead the effort to provide cutting-edge scientific capabilities through the continued modernization of operating instruments at SNS and HFIR, the development of new techniques on existing instruments, the development of new instruments at SNS and HFIR, and the development of instruments for new sources such as the SNS second target station and the HFIR second cold source. This leader must have an understanding of the scientific contributions that can be made with neutron scattering and the vision to identify and lead important new thrusts in instrumentation to enhance the neutron scattering scientific capabilities at SNS and HFIR.

The Instrument Development Leader will be a member of the division management staff in the Neutron Scattering Science Division (NSSD) and the Neutron Facilities Development Division (NFFD) and will report directly to one of these Division Directors. The Instrument Development Leader may have some line management responsibilities, but the extent of such responsibilities is negotiable.

This position is foreseen as a permanent position. However, we are willing to consider an appointment for a more limited term if the candidate so desires.

Major duties and responsibilities:
*             Develops capabilities for and directs activities to produce concepts for new instruments for the remaining beamlines at SNS and HFIR, concepts for initial suite of instruments for a second target station at SNS, concepts for new techniques to enhance existing instrument capabilities, and concepts for new components
*             Creates and maintains a prioritized list of science-driven needs for new capabilities and related instrument development required to meet these needs
*             Implements development projects based on these priorities. These projects may involve interfacing with a number of different groups at NScD including  detectors, sample environment, software, neutron optics, etc.
*             Obtains and manages budget and other resources for development projects, including seeking external funding as appropriate

Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. and an excellent track record, with at least 10 years experience in a technical field. Experience in directing a research or development team is highly desired. Breadth of knowledge about neutron scattering and a vision of the impact that it is capable of making in a broad range of scientific areas is required. The successful candidate must have demonstrated ability to work with a broad spectrum of people in a research environment. Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and enjoy working in a team environment, with the collaboration of all levels, disciplines, and diverse cultural backgrounds of the organization.
