Postdoctoral Research Associate in Neutron Diffraction and Small Angle Scattering Studies
Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Oak Ridge, TN
ORNL10-152-CSD
Project Description:
The Chemical Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is soliciting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Neutron diffraction and small angle scattering studies of electrolyte (aqueous, organic, ionic liquid) bulk behavior, interactions with electrode materials, and response to external fields.
The research will involve structural investigations, primarily by neutron diffraction, of the atomic to nano-scale structures formed in ionic liquids, aqueous and organic electrolytes. In addition to resolving the bulk structures, our interest is in understanding their structure in micro- and nano-porous carbon, as well as the influence of electric fields. The candidate will investigate structures in the electric double layer (EDL) formed at charged surfaces, mimicking electrode processes in advanced battery and capacitor systems. He/she will work closely with other experimental and computational members of the FIRST Energy Frontier Research Center team. The expected outcome of this research is an improved understanding of the electrolyte structure in bulk and in the EDL and its variations with electrolyte composition and external parameters. More information about the FIRST center can be found at
http://www.ornl.gov/sci/first/index.shtml
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a PhD D. in physics, chemistry or a closely related field. This position requires a strong experimentalist with demonstrated experience in neutron diffraction. Experience with small angle neutron scattering and X-ray scattering methods is desirable. The candidate should be a self-starter, able to work independently and able to participate creatively in refining program directions. Presentations at national meetings and publication of scientific results in peer-reviewed journals are expected. The candidate must have good oral and written communication skills in English, and be able to interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues. Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application appointment and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
Technical Questions:
Questions regarding the position can be directed to Gernot Rother at rotherg at ornl.gov<mailto:rotherg at ornl.gov>. Please include the requisition number and title when corresponding.
How to Apply:
Qualified applicants must apply online at https://www2.orau.gov/ORNL_POST/. All applicants will need to register before they can begin the online application. For complete instructions, on how to apply, please see the instructions at http://www.orau.gov/orise/edu/ornl/ornl-pdpm/application.htm.
This appointment is offered through the ORNL Postgraduate Research Participation Program and is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). The program is open to all qualified U.S. and non-U.S. citizens without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, national origin, physical or mental disability, or status as a Vietnam-era veteran or disabled veteran.
