Job Posting Title
Sample Environment Team Leader

Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for a Sample Environment
Team Leader. With the United States' highest flux reactor-based neutron source for condensed matter research (the High
Flux Isotope Reactor) and the world's most intense pulsed, accelerator-based neutron source (the Spallation Neutron
Source), ORNL is becoming the world's foremost center for neutron science. Research at these facilities encompasses the
physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences and will provide opportunities for up to 2000 researchers each
year from industry, research facilities, and universities all over the world. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go
to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.
Purpose:
The role of the Sample Environment Team Leader is to establish world-leading capabilities for temperature, pressure, and
magnetic field environments for neutron scattering experiments at ORNL. A pool of specialized equipment including
actively-shielded high-field magnets, helium dilution refrigerators, controlled atmosphere furnaces, mechanical load frames,
and pressure cells must be developed and supported for user experiments. The Team Leader will develop specifications
and/or new designs, conduct hands-on assembly, testing, and debugging of the equipment, and train a technical team to
become expert operators and troubleshooters. Interaction with groups outside of sample environment is also essential,
especially as new techniques such as pump-probe measurements are developed. The Team Leader must be personally
capable of conducting hands-on operations, training, and face-to-face user support, while pursuing the higher level goals of
team building and providing users with ever expanding capabilities. A Team Leader with a strong scientific background will
also have the opportunity to conduct independent research.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
Develops world-leading capabilities for neutron environments at ORNL, including high magnetic fields, high pressure,
controlled gas atmospheres, and temperature environments ranging from 0.03 K to 1800 K
Recruits, trains, and leads a technical team
Demonstrates expert hands-on skills for developing, testing, operating, and repairing sample environments for neutron
scattering
Ensures safe operation
Interacts, including public speaking and workshop participation and organization, with the scientific user community to
identify and meet needs
Collaborates with scientists and engineers worldwide to push the frontiers of sample environment
Qualifications Required
The successful candidate must have a degree in science or engineering, preferably an advanced degree, with a minimum of
five years of experience in sample environment or a closely-related scientific or technical field. Experience with at least two
of the following is required: developing sample environments for neutron scattering experiments, a track record of
peer-reviewed publications related to neutron scattering and sample environment development, and/or managing a scientific
or highly-technical team in a research environment. The successful candidate must have demonstrated ability to work with a
broad spectrum of people in a research environment. Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication
skills and enjoy working in a team environment, with the collaboration of all levels, disciplines, and diverse cultural
backgrounds of the organization. Physical activities will include light lifting, occasional climbing, and frequent walking, as well
as other requirements as stated on the Physical Requirements and Working Conditions form.
This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or
hired.
We accept Word(.doc, .docx), Excel(.xls, .xlsx), PowerPoint(.ppt, .pptx), Adobe(.pdf), Rich Text Format(.rtf), HTML(.htm,
.hmtl) and text files(.txt) up to 2MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be
deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
If you have trouble applying for a position, please email ORNLRecruiting at ornl.gov.
