Project Description:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a postdoctoral associate to work on developing neutron spin filters based on spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP) of helium-3 (3He). The successful candidate will be based in the Instrument Development Group at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) of ORNL and will work to design, simulate, assemble and test various apparatus related to producing and implementing polarized helium-3 spin filters for use in neutron scattering experiments. Neutron spin filters based on polarized helium-3 are currently being applied at the SNS (see http://wiki.ornl.gov/sites/instrument_development/polarization/spinfilter). The thrust of this associate's efforts will be towards the forefront of spin filter development and its application in the SNS instruments as both polarized neutron polarizer and analyzer. The associate will also be encouraged to pursue, in parallel, his or her own research agenda on polarized neutron scattering experiments using the facilities available at ORNL and/or by submitting competitive proposals to national neutron scattering user facilities.
Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in physics, materials science, chemistry, engineering or similar field is required. Knowledge of neutron scattering and/or experience with polarized neutrons or polarized helium-3 will be an advantage. Successful experience with the design and fabrication of equipment for research is also highly desirable. The candidate should be a self-starter, able to work independently and able to work with staff at all levels within a multi-disciplinary team. The position is for a two, one-year terms. An additional one year term is possible. This position is available immediately. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
Applicants cannot have received their most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
Technical Questions:
Questions regarding the position can be directed to Xin (Tony) Tong, tongx at ornl.gov<mailto:tongx at ornl.gov> or Lee Robertson, robertsonjl at ornl.gov<mailto:robertsonjl at ornl.gov> . Please include the requisition number and title when corresponding.
How to Apply:
Qualified applicants must apply online at https://www2.orau.gov/ORNL_POST/ . All applicants will need to register before they can begin the online application. For complete instructions, on how to apply, please see the instructions at http://www.orau.gov/orise/edu/ornl/ornl-pdpm/application.htm .
This appointment is offered through the ORNL Postgraduate Research Participation Program and is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). The program is open to all qualified U.S. and non-U.S. citizens without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, national origin, physical or mental disability, or status as a Vietnam-era veteran or disabled veteran.
