Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Oak Ridge, TN
ORNL11-16-NSSD
Project Description:

The Neutron Scattering Sciences Division (NSSD) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a postdoctoral research associate for in-situ neutron scattering studies of fuel cell materials. Responsibilities include working with sample environment team at SNS to build instrumentation for in-situ neutron diffraction studies of fuel cell materials, and use this system to study these materials using neutron powder diffraction and other scattering techniques.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

 * Work with sample environment group to develop simultaneous neutron diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis capability for the powder instrument.
 * Participates in other measurements at the inelastic scattering instruments.
 * Participates in sample synthesis and materials development.
 * Presents research results at scientific meetings and publishes research results in scientific journals.
 * Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
 * Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.

Qualifications:

ORNL is seeking a post-doctoral researcher with demonstrated expertise in the area of instrumentation development and diffraction studies of powder materials. Candidates with a recent Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related fields will be considered. Experience and knowledge about x-ray/neutron scattering is desirable. Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems are required. Reports to the instrument scientist of powgen, powder diffractometer at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). Works with other members in the Neutron Scattering Science Division and collaborates with scientists in divisions of Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
