Project Description:

The Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Neutron Imaging Research Scientist.  With the United States' highest flux reactor-based neutron source for condensed matter research (the High Flux Isotope Reactor) and the world's most intense pulsed, accelerator-based neutron source (the Spallation Neutron Source), ORNL is becoming the world's foremost center for neutron science.  Research at these facilities encompasses the physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences and will provide opportunities for up to 2,000 researchers each year from industry, research facilities, and universities all over the world.

A successful candidate will support neutron imaging scientific and development activities of HFIR CG1C and D development beamlines.

Responsibilities:

*         Serves as primary point of contact for significant development activities at CG1 to advance state of the art techniques in neutron imaging.
*         Serves as primary point of contact researcher for neutron imaging measurements at HFIR CG1 beamline, carrying out experiments, and analyzing data in collaboration with the user community.
*         Prepares appropriate samples for characterization using neutrons and other methods.
*         Initiates or maintains a scientific program involving the HFIR CG1 beamline.
*         Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements including ISMS.
*         Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications include: 1) Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science, Engineering, Neutron Science or related field, involving the use of neutron (or X-ray) imaging techniques; 2) Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on technically challenging problems. At least 3 years of experience using an x-ray and/or neutron imaging beamline and experience in software reconstruction, visualization and quantitative analysis is required.  Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
