Subject: NCNR Summer Schools 2011
This year the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) will offer two summer schools over two consecutive weeks in June.
The first week will be devoted to the study of soft matter systems and the second week will focus on the dynamics of hard matter.
For information about the schools, please visit: http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/summerschool/ss11
Please note that this year the schools will be conducted during a scheduled long facility shutdown. Thus, whilst the classes will get hands on experience with the instruments they will use previously collected data for analysis.
Week 1: "Methods and Applications of High Resolution Neutron Spectroscopy and Small Angle Neutron Scattering"
This class will run from Sunday, June 12, to Friday, June 17. Students will explore the use of neutron spin echo and backscattering spectroscopies as well as small angle neutron scattering (SANS) to the study of soft matter. The instruments used during this week will include the NG3<http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/instruments/ng3sans/> 30 meter SANS instrument, and the Neutron Spin Echo<http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/instruments/nse/> and High Flux Backscattering<http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/instruments/hfbs/> spectrometers.
Week 2: "Methods and Applications of Cold and Thermal Neutron Spectroscopy"
This class will run from Saturday, June 18, to Friday, June 24. Students will learn various neutron spectroscopic techniques employed to study hard condensed matter systems. The instruments used during this week will include the cold neutron triple-axis spectrometers SPINS<http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/instruments/spins/> and MACS<http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/instruments/macs/>, the thermal neutron triple-axis spectrometer BT7<http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/instruments/bt7_new/>, and the time-of-flight Disk Chopper Spectrometer<http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/instruments/dcs/>.
The NCNR summer schools will teach the attendees to assess the applicability of the techniques to their own research, and will provide the technical guidance needed to write effective experiment proposals.
The NCNR summer schools are sponsored in part by the National Science Foundation (NSF) through the Center for High Resolution Neutron Scattering (CHRS, DMR- 0944772).
There is a $100 registration fee and attendees are responsible for all transportation and lodging expenses. However, thanks to the NSF, some limited support will be available for graduate students, postdocs, and junior faculty.
Applicants have the option of applying for one or both weeks with applications for each being considered independently. Attendance during each week will be limited to 32 participants. Only applicants from North American institutions will be accepted.
To apply, please visit: http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/summerschool/ss11
Early application is strongly advised since attendance is strictly limited and past NCNR summer schools have been highly oversubscribed. Deadline: April 1, 2011.
