Neutron Scattering Instrument Associate - Powder and Single-Crystal Diffraction Groups
Neutron Scattering Science Division
Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Oak Ridge, TN
ORNL11-44-NSSD
Project Description:
The Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for an immediate Neutron Scattering Instrument Associate to be jointly affiliated with the Powder Diffraction Group and the Single-Crystal Diffraction Group. This position is offered through the Neutron Sciences Career Development Program (COP). With the United States' highest flux reactor-based neutron source for condensed matter research, the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the world's most intense pulsed, accelerator-based neutron source (the Spallation Neutron Source), ORNL is becoming the world's foremost center for neutron science. Research at these facilities encompasses the physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences and will provide opportunities for up to 2,000 researchers each year from industry, research facilities, and universities all over the world . To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov<http://neutrons.ornl.gov/>. <http://neutrons.ornl.gov/>
The Neutron Scattering Science Division (NSSD) carries out and enables excellent and vibrant science programs using neutron scattering instruments by supporting a world-class user science program, developing and participating in signature science programs across ORNL, and conducting cutting-edge in-house research. NSSD is responsible for operating and developing the neutron scattering instruments located at both the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and HFIR.
The Neutron Scattering Instrument Associate serves as the technical specialist in supporting day-to-day neutron beam line operation and assists facility users and NSSD personnel in the performance of experiments and subsequent data analysis.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
* Works with and provides technical guidance to users and NSSD Instrument Scientists in the performance of experiments and analysis.
* Serves as the technical specialist for the operation and maintenance of sophisticated equipment used for neutron scattering, primarily the HB2A Neutron Powder Diffractometer and HB3A Neutron Four-circle Diffractometer, both located at the HFIR
* Plans and leads in the testing and evaluation of new or developmental equipment, particularly, sample environment equipment associated with these diffractometers.
* Ensures that beam line operations are performed under safe and environmentally sound conditions and that NSSD users perform their experiments in a safe and environmentally sound manner.
* Proposes, develops, and presents procedures for operating and maintaining beamline equipment.
* May give work direction to technicians, craft workers, and otherwise experienced personnel.
The Neutron Sciences Career Development Program (CDP) was founded to nurture the creative development of neutron scattering instrumentation at ORNL. This initiative is viewed as a critical part of keeping the neutron scattering instruments at ORNL on the cutting edge of design and scientific functionality and keeping them competitive worldwide. This program is designed to provide an environment in which early-career scientists and technicians can be a part of innovative concepts for neutron-related instrumentation, while helping end users develop proposals, conduct experiments, and analyze data.
This is an Instrument Associate position offered through the ORISE CDP with an initial appointment of three years with a possible extension of up to two additional years. The CDP is designed to attract high-quality candidates, who would gain scientific experience in a world-class neutron scattering facility, with potential to be hired as regular laboratory staff upon exemplary performance and hiring need.
Qualifications:
M.S. degree in chemistry, physics, materials science or related field, or B.s. degree plus 2 years of experience in the same. Good communications and interpersonal skills required. Ability to work in a team environment required. Demonstrated computer literacy including proficiency in word processing required. Direct experience working on neutron scattering related instruments and software is highly desirable. Must be capable of working with scientists and engineers from verbal or written instructions. Must be able to serve as a liaison with other support groups such as engineering, radiological protection, sample environment, user office, etc. Periods of off-normal work hours and infrequent travel will be required.
Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
