The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Group Leader - Neutron Optics.

Description of position
The successful candidate will establish and lead the Neutron Optics group at the ESS. The Neutron Optics group will be responsible for the design and maintenance of the beam extraction and beam delivery systems of all the neutron instruments. The immediate focus will be on the beam extraction, integrating in-pile guides, supermirror switches for bispectral sources and optics for pulse-shaping choppers. Calculational work on shielding materials will also be required to reduce the cost of very long guides.

The Neutron Optics group is based at the ESS in Lund, but will cooperate closely with the neutronic simulation groups in Copenhagen.

Qualifications
Academic qualification:
PhD in one of the physical sciences.

Essential experience:
A minimum of 5 years of experience in the design of neutron scattering instruments, with a strong element of neutron optics, such as guide design or focusing optics.

Desirable experience:
Management of a team of scientists and engineers, project management, thin-film deposition techniques.

Description of department
The Neutron Optics group will be part of the Instrument Support Division under the Science Directorate. The Instrument Support Division provides the technological tools required for the design, construction and operation of the neutron instruments at the ESS. The groups in the Instrument Support Division will undertake development work to ensure that the instruments are equipped to perform world-leading science, in a close dialogue with the instrument scientists. Staff in the Neutron Optics group will develop and design neutron optics solutions for the ESS instruments, such as guides, beam extraction and focusing.

Duration
Permanent

Start date
To be discussed, but as soon as possible.
