The Design Office at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Beam Extraction Engineer to participate in the design effort of the neutron beam line extraction from the target of the ESS.

Description of position
The ESS project is in the Final Preparatory Phase for design before construction. The target and neutron beam extraction are critical in ensuring that a sufficiently large number of high quality beam ports are available for scientific experiments.

The successful candidate should have a background in mechanical and/or nuclear engineering and will deal with the integration of various in-pile neutron-optical components, such as choppers, reflecting optics and shutters into the target station shielding, as well as the engineering aspects of the shielding around neutron guides, optimising weight and cost without compromising shielding effectiveness. In addition the sucessful candidate will lead an R&D programme to deal with issues related to radiation damage in in-pile neutron optics. This work will be carried out in the ESS Project Directorate on behalf of the Science Directorate in a close collaboration with the Target and Instrument Support Divisions of the ESS. Experience in existing nuclear facilities, research reactors or spallation sources will be highly advantageous.

Qualifications

    * Master of Science or equivalent in mechanical engineering and/or nuclear engineering.
    * A minimum of 5 years experience in the implementation of engineering activities as functional descriptions, requirement definitions, design (conceptual, pre-detailed and detailed studies), and definitions of complex interface systems.
    * A minimum of 5 years experience in design work involving an advanced 3 D-CAD system, including 3 years with CATIA.
    * Previous experience in the design of complex components, preferably in nuclear field, support systems, radiation analysis, assembly and remote handling tools would be advantageous.

Description of department
The Design office contributes to the overall integration of ESS. Main areas are Cad-service, Coordination, Integration and Design. The work is performed in remote-design collaboration with our partners around Europe.

Duration & Location
It is a permanent position. The position is stationed in Lund, Sweden.

Start date
To be discussed, but as soon as possible.
