The inaugural NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR)<http://www.ncnr.nist.gov> "Summer School on Modeling Neutron Data of Biological Systems" will be held from Monday, July 11 to Friday, July 15, 2011.

This course is intended to introduce students to modern atomistic approaches to model neutron scattering data. The modeling methods to be covered are molecular dynamics and molecular Monte Carlo simulations of protein and protein-nucleic acid systems. The format of the course will involve a short daily lecture followed by a set of hands-on exercises. Students will learn to use single molecule and ensemble methods to model both rigid and inherently disordered systems. Models will be used to interpret small-angle scattering, neutron reflectivity, and backscattering data. In addition, each day an invited speaker will give a presentation on the application of neutron scattering in their current research activities.

The course is targeted at those with little or no previous experience with molecular modeling of neutron scattering data. The combination of introductory lectures and hands-on training in computational techniques will provide participants with a unique opportunity to become familiar with atomistic modeling of neutron scattering data and their application to current research topics.

The Summer School is sponsored by the NCNR<http://www.ncnr.nist.gov> and by the National Science Foundation<http://www.nsf.gov> under the Center for High Resolution Neutron Scattering (CHRNS)<http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/programs/CHRNS/> cooperative agreement DMR-0944772. There is a $150 registration fee. Support for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty may be requested on the summer school application form<http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/summerschool/ss11/application_model.html>.
