Group Leader - Choppers

The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Group Leader - Choppers.

Description of position
The successful candidate will establish and lead the Chopper group at the ESS. The Chopper group will be responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of the choppers serving all the neutron instruments. The Chopper group leader will coordinate collaboration work with research laboratories, mainly in Europe, in order to develop chopper solutions for the neutron instruments of the ESS. The immediate focus will be on studying issues related to installing and maintaining neutron choppers in the high-radiation environment in and near the proton target monolith. The Chopper group will ensure that the technical solutions for the neutron chopper requirements of the ESS instruments will be available when needed, and will manage the purchasing, maintenance and operation of all the neutron choppers at the ESS. 

Qualifications
Academic qualification: 
Masters degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering. 

Essential experience:
Several years of experience in the design and operation of high-speed rotating machinery using both mechanical and magnetic bearings. 
Experience in both personnel management and project management. 

Desirable experience:
Working with neutron choppers in an academic research environment.

Description of department
The Chopper group will be part of the Instrument Support Division under the Science Directorate. The Instrument Support Division provides the technological tools required for the design, construction and operation of the neutron instruments at the ESS. The groups in the Instrument Support Division will undertake development work to ensure that the instruments are equipped to perform world-leading science, in a close dialogue with the instrument scientists. Staff in the Chopper group will develop, install and maintain neutron choppers for the ESS instruments.

The European Spallation Source ESS AB will design, build and operate a multi-disciplinary, large-scale research infrastructure based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. ESS will provide scientists with unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments for the study of a large range of materials – from polymers and pharmaceuticals to membranes and molecules. The ESS project is partnered by 16 European countries, and hosted by Sweden and Denmark. The ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of European scientists and engineers. ESS is planned to produce the first neutrons by 2019.
