90 Minute Media School

Wednesday 20th July during ECNS2011 - 14:00-15:30

A crash course in sharing your research with 
newspapers, magazines,
radio, TV, social media and the public

In 90 minutes we will equip you with the tools and tips you need to share
your science with non-specialists and raise awareness of your research
beyond your lab and the research journals.

If you are a PhD student, post-doc or early career researchers, 90
Minute Media School is the perfect opportunity to learn and practice how
to improve your communication skills through a mix of top tips and
opportunities to try out what you’ve learnt

Course Outline

1. From research paper to the general media: the science news cycle.
2. Language to use and language to avoid
3. How to be concise
4. Social media and how it can help you share your research
5. Adapting your style to different communication formats
6. The power of photography and video
 7 Dealing with interviews

Tutors
Juliette Savin is Information Manager for NMI3. Juliette has worked for
major science magazines and journals in France and the UK, and has run
community science activities in Brazil.

Martyn Bull is Head of Communications at the ISIS Neutron Source. Martyn
has wide experience of communicating science in print, radio, TV and film
and trains school teachers, students and businesses how to communicate
science and technology.

How to attend
90 Minute Media School will run on Wednesday 20th July during ECNS2011
from 14:00-15:30. Spaces are limited. You can sign up at the NMI3 booth in
the main foyer of the conference venue. Participants are asked to bring a
scientific article to use during the workshop.
