Group Leader - Sample Environment
The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for the position of a "Group Leader - Sample Environment".

Description of department:
The Sample Environment group will be part of the Instrument Support Division under the Science Directorate. The Instrument Support Division provides the technological tools required for the design, construction and operation of the neutron instruments at the ESS. The groups in the Instrument Support Division will undertake development work to ensure that the instruments at ESS are world-leading.

Description of position/main responsibilities:
The role of the Sample Environment Group will allow future users of ESS to perform neutron scattering experiments subjecting their samples to extreme temperatures, pressures, and fields once ESS delivers the first neutrons in 2019.
The group will be responsible for preparing and operating the equipment during the course of an experiment along with general maintenance.
The unique characteristics of ESS will allow new experiments, formerly not possible requiring sample environment that e.g. operate synchronous with the ESS pulse structure. To determine top priorities and future research trends, consultation with different user communities and leading researchers overseas is of paramount importance
to allow not only high-profile neutron experiments, but also complementary characterisation to be carried out at ESS.

The successful candidate will establish and lead the Sample Environment group at ESS. The Sample Environment group will be responsible for the design, acquisition and commissioning of different kinds of devices and components providing not only high and low temperatures, high magnetic fields, and high pressure but also unique hardware for soft-matter experiments using fast neutron instruments. The candidate will have to liaise with external groups, in-kind contributors, as well as the instruments scientists at ESS in Lund, to establish the framework for the design, acquisition and commissioning of different kind of devices and components with a strong focus on standardisation and automation.

Academic qualification:
Masters degree in physics or any of the natural sciences.
Essential experience:

A minimum of 5 years of experience in using/designing of sample environment, preferably with respect to neutron scattering instruments.
Motivational leadership skills

The European Spallation Source ESS AB will design, build and operate a multi-disciplinary, large-scale research infrastructure based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. ESS will provide scientists with unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments for the study of a large range of materials – from polymers and pharmaceuticals to membranes and molecules. The ESS project is partnered by 17 European countries, and hosted by Sweden and Denmark. The ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of European scientists and engineers. ESS is planned to produce the first neutrons by 2019. When the facility is in full operation 2025, ESS has around 450 employees.

ESS aim to ensure that staff are employed on the basis of ability and the requirements of the job, and that no applicant or employee receives less favourable treatment because of race, religion, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation or disability.
